OUR MISSION
The I.C.A.F. was founded to provide its students with a complete and practical method of self-defense and personal development. It is, and will remain, a living system that continues to grow and evolve as circumstances dictate. As an organization, we will strive to instill in our students a great respect for the diversity of the martial arts. We will accept diversity in the arts, as well as our fellow man, as a strength to be valued and protected. We pledge to nurture the character of our students by accepting and adhering to the character traits of Budo as a universal good.
OUR SYSTEM
The martial arts, as taught and sanctioned by the International Combat Arts Federation (I.C.A.F.), is based in part on the Chang Hun style of Taekwondo. In 1991, Mr. Alan Pepin, founder of the Inter- national Combat Arts Federation, and a select group of individuals began to examine the traditional art that they were teaching. It was discovered that, through commercialism, the art had become limited and, in a sense, lost some of its practical meaning and application. The I.C.A.F. has begun the task of creating a martial arts system which is based entirely upon scientific principles and research.
The first step in the process was to conduct an honest evaluation of our base art, Taekwondo. We examined its strengths, which included strong kicking and striking techniques. We also examined its weaknesses: the lack of any ground fighting techniques, few close quarter combat techniques, and a lack of restraint and control techniques. To overcome the deficiencies in our system, we chose to incorporate many of the techniques of Jujitsu. Jujitsu is a parent art from which many other arts have been developed. It is known for its strong ground fighting component and its devas-tating throwing and joint locking techniques. To a lesser extent, we have also incorporated techniques from other styles, such as Hapkido, Aikido, Judo, and Escrima.
After the codification of these techniques into our curriculum, we realized that it was no longer accurate to call what we teach as “Taekwondo.” In 1996, the I.C.A.F. Advisory Board met and chose “Sogo Ryu Bujutsu” (Integrated System of Martial Arts) as the new name for our system.

I.C.A.F. MEMBERSHIP
Membership in the I.C.A.F. defines your level of professionalism in the martial arts community. Whether you have a vast range of experience as a martial arts instructor, or have recently assumed responsibility for teaching students, you will find that membership in the I.C.A.F. will provide a means to heighten your abilities and expand your understanding of the martial arts.
Membership in the International Combat Arts Federation allows instructors a great deal of flexibility by allowing a school or club owner to develop, within organizational parameters, his/her own curriculum and submit it to the Advisory Board for review and approval.
As an organization, we have an interest in ensuring a high standard of training for all students. For instance, School owners may choose to use a separate set of forms or to require Two or Three Step Sparring -- this is their prerogative. The purpose of review by the Advisory Board is to ensure that the curriculum is structured and complete, providing a high quality of training for the student. It should be noted that while an Instructor may develop his/her own curriculum, he/she is still bound to the policies and procedures of the I.C.A.F.
A broad basic curriculum is contained in the I.C.A.F. Instructor’s Manual. Schools and clubs that are not familiar with the curriculum, but who wish to use it, will receive instruction upon request. ">The International Combat Arts Federation was founded to provide martial arts instructors a flexible organization which is sensitive to their individual needs. Unlike more traditional organizations with one head who dictates policy, the I.C.A.F. is governed by an Advisory Board, which meets on a regular basis to discuss issues of concern to the membership and make recommendations to the President.
